Medford Leas derives its special character from the extraordinary community of individuals who live and work here. Since 1971, when the first residents moved to Medford Leas, the Quaker principle of loving concern has attracted individuals eager to sample the life of such a community and, in turn, to enrich it with their own special gifts. Many residents volunteer in the wider community while others give of themselves to their Medford Leas neighbors and staff.

For those interested in returning to the classroom, we offer Medford University. Course presenters are drawn from area college and university level professors, as well as from Medford Leas’ own resident experts. Sessions are held at the Medford Campus and have covered an amazing range of subjects from Ancient History and Archeology; Civil Liberties; and Comparative European Governments; to Ecosystems, The History and Interpretation of Jazz, and Three Writers & The American Dream. Generally courses run for six weeks — 90 minutes per session — and are adapted to the senior lifestyle with no homework or exams.

Medford Leas maintains strong ties to the horticultural community by hosting the Master Gardeners of Burlington County, which is sponsored by the Rutgers Cooperative Extension. This volunteer group of trained experts is on hand in the Medford Leas Nature Center on a regular basis to answer questions about all aspects of home gardening. Master Gardeners work in conjunction with the Burlington County agricultural agent to provide horticultural programs that both enhance the local landscape and educate the local community.
